Hotpoint Wdl540 No Heat
Hi,
Got a Hotpoint WDL540 washer/dryer which i've owned from new (2008) which has been giving me problems.
There is now no heat to any of the wash cycles - so I'm guessing that the thermostat has gone? (Advice please).
I have never worked on a washing machine before so before I get my hands dirty, do you think I should have a go and try to fix these two problems or am I biting off more than I can chew? (Advice please).
I don't want to pay for an engineer to come out as I'm guessing it could be quite costly, especially when I can get a new one for £250.
Thanks

The risk is that many people end up paying out much more than an engineer would cost when they try to fix it themselves. Buying parts that weren't necessary and didn't cure the fault is very common. If the heater or thermostat on the washer have gone the washing machine should be producing an error code with flashing lights?

OK Andy - thanks for your help
In theory, if the heater isn't working a washer shouldn't finish the programme. If it goes open circuit mid cycle though it can just continue to wash forever. But if it finishes the cycle, in normal time and clothes are clean it should be working.
Regarding using hot water read my blog article here - http://www.whitegoodshelp.co.uk/can-you-connect-the-hot-water-supply-to-the-cold-valve-on-cold-fill-washing-machines/

No flashing lights when using the washing machine (only when using dryer). The reason why I think there is no heat is there is no lather with the laundry powder/liquid even at 90 degrees & clothes are cold & smell funny after wash.
How about I hook the washing machine up to the hot water supply instead of cold as the source of water.
Do you think that would work - (if i've got hot water available) as a way of getting the temp up to make a lather? Or is ther any problems hooking up to the hot water supply - (strain on system?)?
