I have inherited an old washing machine in the apartment that I rent. It's been used for more than 6 years by other people, and had all kinds of things, like mats, etc, washed in it. Is it OK to use?

Try putting it on the hottest wash cycle, with detergent inside but no clothes, this should virtually boil the water at around 90 degrees. If you want you could run this a couple of times although give it a rest in between.

Keep an eye on it whilst it's running too until you can trust it.

Thank you. What I mean is that the room the washing machine is in has no hot water connection, so there's only cold water I can use in it.

Most washing machines don't have hot water valves now. They just heat the water up themselves. As long as you've done 2 or 3 hot washes like the ones I mentioned before there shouldn't be any problem.

Thanks.

So I discovered that the washing machine does not have a connect to hot water. Is there any way to make it useable for clothing etc? What my wife is worried about is the crud that's settled in the bottom of the machine over the years. Is this really an issue?
