Burnt? Smell on towels after washing/drying?

This washer/Condense dryer: There is a burnt like smell on the towels after using the dryer after washing the towels. My small vented tumble dryer does not produce the same smell on the same towels when I dry the towels in that. What is this smell?

Thanks.

That sort of “burnt” smell after the drying phase on a washer dryer is often not the towels themselves burning, but overheating fluff, detergent/softener residue, or an issue with the drying system running too hot. Because your separate vented dryer doesn’t do it, the fault is likely specific to the Hoover’s drying circuit or airflow/condensing system.

1. Check for residue build-up Towels can hold a lot of detergent and fabric conditioner. In a washer dryer, that residue can heat up and give an unpleasant hot or scorched smell. Try rewashing a load of towels with no conditioner and a reduced amount of detergent, then dry again.

2. Clean the drum and door seal Look for greasy residue, fluff, or dark deposits around the drum paddles, door glass, and rubber seal. A hot maintenance wash can help remove built-up deposits.

3. Check the condenser/drying system On condenser washer dryers, poor cooling water flow or restricted internal airflow can cause hotter-than-normal drying and smells. If the appliance is not condensing properly, steam and hot odours may be more noticeable.

4. Watch for overheating signs If clothes feel excessively hot, the cycle takes too long, or the smell is getting worse, stop using the drying function until it’s checked. A faulty heater, thermostat, fan, or fluff build-up internally could be the cause.

5. Consider internal fluff build-up Washer dryers can accumulate lint internally in places you can’t easily access. Isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. If internal cleaning or testing is needed, it’s best handled by a qualified engineer.

If you need parts, only search by the full model number H3D 4106TE/1-80 at the Whitegoods Help Spare Parts Shop. For any mains-related testing or deeper strip-down, I’d recommend a qualified engineer.

SAFETY FIRST: READ BEFORE ACTING ON THIS GUIDANCE

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional. Do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts have sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you are not confident testing or working inside the appliance, stop and call a professional.
