Hi! we have a maytag bravo washer that doesn't work. It will sense and spin. But when it gets to agitate and rinse the timer will skip from 32 mins to 4 mins. And will start to drain. The clothes will come out dripping wet.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, from your description the machine is able to drain and spin at least to some extent, but it is not carrying out the wash/agitate part of the cycle, then it appears to abort and jump to the end. That usually points to a fault with the drive/agitation system, load sensing, or a control issue rather than a simple drain problem.

A few checks to narrow it down:

1. Check whether it actually fills properly for the wash/rinse phase If water flow is weak, or one inlet valve is faulty, some machines can skip parts of the cycle. Make sure both hot and cold supplies are turned on and the inlet hose filters are not blocked.

2. Listen when it should agitate If you hear the motor trying but the drum/agitator does not move, there may be a worn drive coupling, belt, actuator, splutch/clutch assembly, or gearbox-related fault depending on the exact model.

3. Check if it drains too early If it fills, then immediately drains without washing, inspect the pressure system. A faulty pressure switch, blocked pressure hose, or air trap issue can make the control think the water level is wrong.

4. Consider the lid lock On many top loaders, a faulty lid lock or position sensing issue can cause odd cycle behaviour, skipping stages, or leaving laundry wet.

5. Try a calibration/reset if your model allows it Some electronically controlled Maytag/Whirlpool machines can behave like this if they lose calibration. The tech sheet for the exact model may show a recalibration or diagnostic routine.

6. Check for stored fault codes If the machine has a service/diagnostic mode, that would be very useful here, as the timer jumping from 32 to 4 minutes suggests the control is detecting a fault and shortening the cycle.

Please isolate the appliance from the mains before removing any panels or inspecting internal parts. If the fault is with wiring, the control board, or drive components, it would be best checked by a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
