My WMEF722 7kg washing machine keeps switching off mid cycle. The LCD display counts down 3..2..1 then switches off completely. Does anyone have a rough idea what could be causing the problem? or is it time for a new machine ! I hope not. Thanks in advance.

That countdown and full power-off usually points to the machine losing its supply or the control shutting itself down, rather than a simple wash fault. It may still be repairable, but it needs narrowing down.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

1. Check the power supply first Make sure the plug is fully in, the socket is sound, and there’s no loose connection. If it’s on an extension lead, remove that and plug directly into a wall socket. A poor supply can cause random shut-downs.

2. Watch when it fails Does it happen at the same point every time, such as when heating, draining or spinning? - If it cuts out when heating, the heater or wiring could be pulling the control down. - If it happens at spin, vibration may be disturbing a loose connection.

3. Inspect for signs of moisture or burning If you are competent to remove the lid/top, look for burnt connectors, especially around the mains filter, control board, door lock and wiring loom. Also check for any signs of water drips onto electrics.

4. Door interlock A failing door lock can cause odd shut-down behaviour on some Hotpoint/Indesit machines. If the machine loses power to the display as it tries to continue the cycle, this is one area worth checking.

5. Control board / power module If the machine truly goes dead rather than showing a fault, the main suspect is often the power supply section on the control board or a bad connection feeding it.

If it’s otherwise in decent condition, I wouldn’t write it off yet. But for mains electrical testing or board diagnosis, it’s best to use a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
