Vax vacuum cleaner filter warning and poor suction
Hoping someone can help with my Vax vacuum cleaner (Air Stretch) — the filter warning is showing and performance is poor. Is it worth repairing or should I just replace it?
1 Answer
If the filter warning is on and suction is poor, the most common cause is simply restricted airflow rather than a major failure. On a Vax Air Stretch it is often worth checking the basics before deciding to replace it.
1. Isolate it from the mains first, then empty the dust container fully. A compacted bin can reduce airflow badly even if it does not look full.
2. Remove and inspect all filters. If they are washable, rinse them in clean water only and let them dry naturally for at least 24 hours, preferably longer. Do not refit damp filters. If the filters are worn, split, or still clogged after washing, replace them.
3. Check for blockages through the full air path: - hose - wand - floor head - inlet to the bin/cyclone assembly A partial blockage will often trigger the filter warning and cause poor pickup.
4. Inspect the brush bar and floor head. Hair, thread, and fibres wrapped around the brush can reduce performance, especially on carpets.
5. Check for air leaks. Make sure the bin, seals, hose connections, and filter covers are fitting properly. A poor seal can upset airflow and trigger warnings.
6. If the warning remains after cleaning and there are no blockages, the issue could be a faulty sensor, damaged filter housing, or a tired motor. At that point, compare the cost of filters/parts against the age and condition of the cleaner.
If it is otherwise in decent condition, it is usually worth trying new filters first. For any internal electrical testing or motor work, use a qualified engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice
Never work on a live appliance
Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.
Never attempt gas work
By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.
Watch for sharp edges
Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.
Water appliances can leak
Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.
Know your limits
If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
