Help - Bosch kettle leaking from the base
Hoping someone can help with my Bosch kettle — water leaks out of the bottom onto the worktop. Any idea what's causing this?
1 Answer
A kettle leaking from the base usually means either the body is leaking internally and water is escaping through the bottom, or there’s a problem around the level/window seal or element area. Unfortunately, once water is getting into the base, it’s often not an economical or safe repair on a domestic kettle.
A few checks you can do:
1. Stop using it for now If water is reaching the electrical base area, there is a shock risk. Unplug it from the mains and don’t use it again until you’ve identified the source.
2. Check where the leak actually starts Dry the kettle fully, then fill it cold and stand it on a dry bit of kitchen roll, off the powered base if possible. See if water appears from: - the water level window - around the bottom seam - the spout/filter area - only when boiling
3. Inspect for cracks or damaged seals Look closely at the plastic body, especially near the handle, water gauge, and lower seam. Even a small crack can send water down into the base.
4. Consider limescale damage Heavy scale can sometimes cause poor sealing or direct drips internally. If badly scaled, that may have contributed, but descaling rarely cures a true base leak.
5. Be realistic about repair Kettles are generally not designed for safe internal repair, and spare seals/body parts are often unavailable. If it leaks from the bottom seam or into the electrical base, replacement is usually the sensible option.
Safety reminder: isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. For any mains electrical work, use a qualified engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice
Never work on a live appliance
Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.
Never attempt gas work
By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.
Watch for sharp edges
Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.
Water appliances can leak
Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.
Know your limits
If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
