My Swan dehumidifier, about 6 months old — it runs but the tank stays empty. Is this something I can fix myself or do I need an engineer?

If it runs but never collects water, the fault could be anything from normal operating conditions to a failed fan, sensor, or sealed-system problem. At 6 months old, I’d be thinking warranty first rather than dismantling it.

1. Check the room conditions Dehumidifiers remove very little water if the room is too cool or already fairly dry. If possible, try it in a warmer room and set it to continuous or the lowest humidity setting.

2. Check airflow Make sure the air inlet and outlet grilles are clear and the filter is clean. A blocked filter or poor airflow can stop proper dehumidifying even though the machine appears to run.

3. Listen for the fan and compressor You should usually hear a change in sound after startup, with the fan moving air properly. If it’s running but only blowing weakly, or there’s no noticeable warmth/coolness across the airflow, that helps narrow it down.

4. Look for icing or no temperature change If the evaporator ices up heavily, or if the coils never become cool/warm at all, that points more towards a control, fan, or sealed refrigeration issue.

5. Check the tank and float switch Make sure the bucket is seated properly and the float isn’t stuck, although this more often causes a “tank full” type problem rather than no water collection.

Safety reminder: isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. I wouldn’t advise opening it at this age. If the simple checks above make no difference, contact Swan under warranty. Any mains electrical or sealed refrigeration work should be left to a qualified engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
