New Miele - Hot Smell

I just had a new Miele washer/dryer combo machine delivered to me today. In the first cycle that runs to get the machine started with no clothes in it, the washer is giving off a "hot" smell. It's not really a "burning" smell but it smells very hot. And in the first load I washed, it gave off this same smell. What is this and does it go away? Thanks!

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.

New Miele washer/dryer giving off a hot smell on first uses

The problem
A newly delivered Miele washer/dryer combo gave off a noticeably hot smell during the initial empty start-up cycle and again on the first wash load. The smell was described as hot rather than clearly burning.
Likely cause
The strongest suggestion in the discussion is that the smell may be due to the machine being new and could fade with use, but this was not confirmed. Because the smell occurred on a 40 degree wash, the reply considered it unusual.
What fixed it
The accepted advice was to contact Miele using the number in the instruction book to be on the safe side. The exact repair or cause was not confirmed in the thread.
Checks to try
  • Smell occurred during the initial empty cycle
  • Smell occurred again on the first wash load
  • User reported using 40 degree washes

Safety: If the appliance continues to smell hot, further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

It's clearly an unusual smell, which may fade as the machine is used. It may well be just the newness of the washing machine but to be on the safe side it might be better to ring Miele using the number on the instruction book. If you are using 40 degree washes it shouldn't smell hot.
