Water In Softener Part Of Detergent Drawer

My elderly mother has a new washing machine and has used it twice. Although she hasn't used any softener, at the end of the cycle the softener part of the detergent drawer is full of water. Why does that happen?

Hello Mary. It sounds like there's a blockage in the fabric conditioner department. This should answer your question The fabric conditioner / rinse aid compartment is always full of water
