We have been using Kirkland Ultra Clean from Costco as it is HE compatible. (High Efficiency)

does anyone know of a suitable alternative, reasonably prices detergent that is either HE compatible or

they have personal experience using in a similar top loading washing machine that stipulates it requires an

HE detergent.

Hank you in advance for any replies,

Maytag top-loading washer: query about suitable HE detergent alternative

The problem
The owner of a Maytag top-loading washing machine asked for a reasonably priced alternative to Kirkland Ultra Clean, stating the machine stipulates use of HE detergent.
Likely cause
No appliance fault was reported. The discussion suggests the issue was understanding what 'HE detergent' means in the UK market. The strongest view given was that HE refers to low-suds detergent, and that most washing machine detergents sold in the UK are likely to meet that requirement.
What fixed it
Accepted advice was that HE detergents are mainly a US term and may not be specifically marketed in the UK. A further reply suggested that what the US calls HE detergent is essentially low-suds detergent, so ordinary UK washing machine detergents are likely to be suitable. Liquid detergent was not recommended by contributors due to concerns about residue and odour, but no specific product or confirmed substitute was named.
Checks to try
  • Owner stated the Maytag top loader stipulates HE detergent
  • Forum replies noted HE detergent appears to be mainly a US term
  • Reply suggested HE means low-suds detergent

Hello Robert. To be honest I was under the impression that HE detergents were only used in America, and particularly in top loaders. Whenever I search for HE washing machine detergents, all the results are in America. Does your washing machine specify to use HE detergent? I can't even see any mention of this type of detergent on the Which? website, which tends to imply my idea that we don't really use it here might be correct?

Hi Rafal. I'm not sure what you mean regarding substitutes as in substitutes for what? Personally I don't like liquid detergent at all, it tends to make a mess of washing machines after a while.

I think what the US call HE detergent, just means it is low suds, so just about any washing machine detergent currently sold in the UK. We also have bio and non-bio, which isn't a USA thing, bio just means it contain enzymes.

I'm also not keen on liquid detergents, their residue promotes bacterial growth in the machine which can make it smell unless you do occasional 60C + washes, or use other products like laundry sanitisers. Also they don't contain oxygen bleach:-
