Hi,

I have been given a machine that I was going to scrap and use the drum for a fire pit but I have noticed that it is in good condition generally. I asked the previous owner what was wrong with it and they said the door catch is broke and it made a loud noise when washing.

Attached is a pic of the wires that go down to the interlock. Is it possible to find out which of these are common live and earth by testing with an ohm meter ?

Also can I bypass the interlock so that I can check out what the loud noise is so that I can work out if it's worth repairing?

Is it possible to by a new wire and connector lead if so where might I get one?

One last thing , there are no screws holding the interlock switch in but it appears glued in. Is this normal?

Many thanks

Pete

Hello Pete. The first thing I would do is spin the drum by hand as fast as you can. If it is very noisy then the chances are the drum bearings have gone and the washing machine isn't likely to be worth bothering with.

You should be able to determine live and neutral by testing with a meter down the plug on live and neutral side. I would be wary of trying to bypass the door interlock. If you connect the wrong wires the whole machine will blow. My article here gives basic advice about how door interlocks work.

I would think it quite unlikely you would be able to buy any new wires and connector leads. These parts are just rarely made available spares.

I've not come across any interlocks glued in place though very little would surprise me these days. Make sure it doesn't slide and clip out.
