Kenmore front load washer would not start after door was forced open mid-cycle
- The problem
- The washer began making a squeaky noise, then the door was pulled open during draining/spinning. After replacing a snapped plastic piece, the machine would not start a cycle or fill with water.
- Likely cause
- Most strongly supported diagnosis is damage or misalignment of the door latch/door lock mechanism caused when the door was opened mid-cycle. The accepted reply says the door latch may no longer be operating the door lock, or the door lock itself was damaged.
- What fixed it
- Recommended action was to inspect the door latch first, including whether its spring still holds it in the correct position, and replace the door lock mechanism if damaged. A reset by removing and refitting the part was not expected to solve it. The original poster said they were buying the locking mechanism to replace it, but no completed repair was confirmed.
- Checks to try
- Checked that a plastic piece had snapped and was replaced
- Advised to ensure the door latch mechanism is intact
- Advised to check whether the latch spring holds the latch in the correct position
- Advised to check whether the door latch correctly operates the door lock mechanism
- Parts or tools mentioned
- Door lock mechanism
- Door latch mechanism
- Latch spring

When the door closes it should operate a door lock mechanism. Maybe something else got damaged or knocked out of line and the door latch is no longer operating the door lock mechanism or the door lock was also damaged.

Thank you we are buying the locking mechanism and replacing it I found a video online I will update after it’s installed.
Quick question, if we try taking it out and putting it back in would that reset it? I mean before we put the money out for a new one or is this a waste of time.
It’s not something I would expect can be reset. The door has a latch mechanism that fits inside the door lock and operates the latch mechanism inside the door lock. Ensure the door latch mechanism is ok first. They are normally held in a certain position by a spring. If the spring is not fixing it into this position it can’t operate the door lock.
