Water fill valve question.

I'm completely new to fixing washing machines. I connected only the cold line to a washer I received just to see if i could get it to wash a shirt since I was told it was broke and nothing else. I simply want to know if water should come out of the hot side back onto the floor if the hot side is not connected, or does this mean the valve is broken.

If the hot water valve is activated with no hose connected then water that is trapped inside it will usually drip out of it.

Hello. I didn't realise there was a lot of water coming out. The way it was worded I took it to mean that you hadn't connected the hot water supply to the hot valve and when you used the washing machine some water dribbled out of the hot valve at the back. That as I replied is normal. But if there is a lot of water flooding out then clearly it's something totally different. With a leak you need to observe where the water is coming from.

It is bad enough that tub seems to fill at normal speed almost but cold water is flowing out hot water at a gallon or two a minute on to the floor. Luckily fill valves are cheap if i have to get one. I will check resistance on hot side when I get home if i can.
