Hotpoint washer dryer blowing elements

Hi, I have a Hotpoint washer dryer. About a week ago it would not dry, the fan kicked up but would not heat. After testing the element with the multimeter it had blown. I fitted a replacement element and thermostat as it was giving some odd readings so assumed that had caused the element to go. It worked briefly when I was just testing it however when I came to get the clothes out at the end it was still wet and cold. Tried it again and it was blowing cold again. Tested the element and it had blown the replacement. Just after some advice on what to look for next, all wiring seems fine so I am assuming it’s a board fault?

Solution Summary

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.

Hotpoint washer dryer repeatedly blowing replacement heater on drying cycle

The problem
The Hotpoint washer dryer stopped heating on the drying cycle. The original heater element tested as blown, and after fitting a replacement element and thermostat, the machine briefly heated during testing but then completed a cycle with clothes still wet and cold. A further test showed the replacement element had also blown.
Likely cause
The accepted reply suggested a blockage restricting airflow, or a problem preventing water from trickling into or out of the condenser chamber. The original poster reported checking these areas and could not find an obvious issue, so the exact cause was not confirmed.
What fixed it
Recommended action was to check for airflow restrictions and condenser chamber water flow issues using the guidance provided. The original poster stated they had flushed fluff from the rear section, checked water intake, and followed the suggested checks, but no confirmed repair was recorded. Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.
Checks to try
  • Tested the heater element with a multimeter
  • Replaced the heater element
  • Replaced the thermostat
  • Checked wiring visually
  • Flushed fluff from the rear section of the unit and into the door seal
  • Checked that the machine takes in water
  • Checked for blockage restricting airflow
  • Checked for issues with water trickling into or out of the condenser chamber
Parts or tools mentioned
  • Multimeter
  • Replacement element
  • Thermostat

Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

Hi there Tom. It could be a problem with either a blockage restricting airflow, or something stopping the water trickling into or out of the condenser chamber. Check this article Washer dryer not heating on the drying cycle

Hi Andy, thanks for the suggestions. I previously didn’t mention that when I replaced the element originally I flushed out the fluff from the rear section of the unit and down into the door seal. I also checked it took it’s water in which it seems to do. I’ve also checked and done everything mentioned in the article you suggested and there appears to be no issues with any of that. Any idea based on what I’ve said, I know it’s difficult when you don’t see it for yourself but anything you can think of would be great.
