I got called to help by a relative when her washing machine failed. Took the back off and found the belt had come off. Out the belt back on and it seemed to work but when a small load was placed in and it started a high speed spin it got very loud and clattery before throwing off the belt again.

Any suggestions what the issue could be before I start randomly replacing bits?

Hi. It sounds like the drum bearings have failed. See if you can lift the drum up and down at the front. If the drum lifts up and down on the shaft and there is obviously excessive play, then the bearings are collapsing. This is a very big job, and the chances are it's not worth repairing.

Other causes could be if the drum pulley itself that the belt fits onto is loose. I have a fully comprehensive article on this very subject here Washing machine belt keeps coming off

Aye if the drum lifts up and down more than a fraction of a mm, the bearings and or drum shaft are worn.

Thanks for your reply. I can lift the front of the drum up substantially without any errort, which I guess confirms your suspicion that it's time to replace the machine
