Knocking sound in vintage Hotpoint First Editions 1000 - suggestions please!
I'm not a plumber or electrician, but will always have a go at buying a part and replacing something that can be repaired. Advice needed here...
I have a vintage Hotpoint First Edition 1000 that has served me well - over 20 years old. Great machine.
Recently, a random knocking sound has been happening - occasionally before the spin cycle but mainly during the spin cycle - when it gets very loud.
I removed the top and filmed it - the movement of the drum seems ok to me. Any idea what might be the problem from the experts here?
I am in Leytonstone East London if anyone wants to quote me for a repair (if this is a particularly awkward job I can't do myself)

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.
Hotpoint First Edition 1000 knocking during spin
- The problem
- A Hotpoint First Edition 1000 washing machine, over 20 years old, developed an intermittent knocking noise, mainly during the spin cycle and sometimes just before spin. The drum movement seen from the top did not obviously look abnormal to the owner.
- Likely cause
- The strongest diagnosis in the discussion was a mechanical knock from the suspension or chassis, particularly cracks in the chassis/base plate around the suspension leg mounts. Other suggested possibilities were a cracked aluminium drum pulley, an item trapped under the drum, or a cracked drum spider, but these were not confirmed.
- What fixed it
- The accepted advice was to disconnect the machine from the electrics, then manually bounce the drum to try to reproduce the noise and listen for its source. Recommended checks were the chassis for cracks and the suspension. If the noise could not be reproduced by hand, the next suggested check was the aluminium drum pulley for cracks. No completed repair was confirmed in the thread.
- Checks to try
- Bounce the drum by hand to try to reproduce the noise
- Listen for where the sound is coming from
- Check the chassis for cracks
- Check the suspension
- Check the aluminium drum pulley for cracks if the noise is not present by hand
- Parts or tools mentioned
- Suspension kit
- Repair bracket
Safety: Disconnect from the electrics before carrying out checks. Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

Hi. The first thing I would do is disconnect from the electrics. Then bounce the drum about by hand to replicate the movement of the drum. If the sound is still present use your ears to work out where from. Check the chassis for cracks and check suspension.
If the sound isn't present check the aluminium drum pulley for cracks.

Either something in under the drum or I`d say the drum spider is cracked BUT that noise is usually much louder. It is also equally possible that there is a crack under the supension leg so the chassis base plate, under if memory serves me right, one (or both) of the suspension rubber mounts. This model series were famed for it.
P.S. if it is the chassis split under the suspension leg/s there was a repair bracket available at the time but now? Also because of its age the suspension itself is probably getting worn out so be warned. Think the whole suspension kit (both sides) last time I looked (a while back now as in several years) was about 79 quid but probably obsolete at a guess?
