I noticed you dissing AEG's sealed tubs? on another topic. What are they and why are they bad? Do all AEG's have them? As you know AEG has a pretty good rep regardless.

Solution Summary

AI-generated from this discussion

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.

Sealed washing machine tubs are difficult and costly to repair

The problem
The discussion was about what sealed tubs are and why they are considered bad on washing machines, rather than a fault on one specific appliance. The concern raised was whether AEG machines use sealed tubs and the implications if a machine develops a problem.
Likely cause
Accepted advice stated that sealed or welded tubs are designed so they cannot be stripped down. This means common internal faults such as failed drum bearings, tub leaks or obstructions trapped inside cannot usually be repaired in the normal way, leading to major assembly replacement. It was also stated that the design is used to reduce production costs.
What fixed it
No repair was carried out because this was a general advice thread. The accepted answer explained that with a sealed tub, the usual remedy for internal tub, drum or bearing problems is replacement of the complete outer tub, inner tub and drum assembly, which was described as expensive. Exact repair on any specific machine was not confirmed.
Checks to try
  • Accepted reply stated sealed tubs cannot be stripped down to remove obstructions
  • Accepted reply stated failed drum bearings, tub leaks or jammed items would require complete tub and drum assembly replacement
  • Forum replies stated all E/lux, Zanussi and the AEG Protex series have welded tubs
Parts or tools mentioned
  • complete outer tub
  • inner tub
  • drum assembly

Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

Hello, it's not just AEG. It's because they are unrepairable, you can't even strip them down to remove obstructions. So if the drum bearings fail, the tub leaks, or something get's jammed inside you have to replace the entire outer and inner tub and drum at great expense. As far as I know they will all have them as the only reason to do it is to save on production costs.

Ah, so maybe Which's report should say: The AEG is one of the best washer/dryers we've ever seen (unless it breaks, in which case you're screwed).

It should really but they don't ever seem to look at it from a repairman's point of view, which is where I come in

Here's a list of current washing machines made with totally sealed tubs as supplied to me by a fellow engineer. Unfortunately that's a big percentage of available machines and more could join in..

All Hoover washing machines

All Candy washing machines

All Hotpoint washing machines

All Indesit washing machines

Bosch 'Classixx' range washing machines

Many makes sold at Argos

All makes sold at Asda

All E/lux, Zanussi and the AEG protex series have welded tubs.
