Machine was not on, we were watching to and there was an audible bang from kitchen and RCD was tripped. Thought it was the oven as that is basically what we were using at the time. Found out later the watching machine no longer turns on when button pressed. No lights, nothing. No problems and had been working well up till then.

Followed advice checked fuses and okay, tried another device in the power socked which worked.

Any suggestions? Would actually be interested to find out what caused it as machine was not on! Everything else is working fine and we have had no repeat event?

It's very unusual if the washer wasn't even switched on at the time. When not switched on but plugged into the mains then electricity runs through the socket, mains cable, into the terminal block and through the suppressor so those are the things I'd check first - especially the suppressor (watch out though suppressors can hold a charge after being plugged in!).

If you can't see anything wrong with the mains cable or suppressor though you'll not be able to trace the fault without an engineer's insulation test meter to trace it as described here - appliance tripping electrics

It's possible power may also go to the door interlock. But unless you can see something's blown it's not possible to troubleshoot without the insulation test meter.

Yes strange, thinking it might be the suppressor as this was listed on shorting link you provided. Some people seem to think it could be the door latch.
