WDD 030 - noisy pump

I have a brand new WDD 030 washing machine. The only issue is that when the water drains, there is an unpleasant "knocking" or "gurgling" sound that seems to come from behind the dispenser drawer. The Miele agent stripped down the machine and has taken a video of the issue to discuss with Miele. Could this be a problem with the pump? If so, would a new pump be any better?

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.

WDD 030 draining noise from dispenser area

The problem
A brand new Miele WDD 030 washing machine makes an unpleasant knocking or gurgling noise when draining, apparently from behind the dispenser drawer.
Likely cause
The discussion suggests the main drain pump is unlikely if the noise is genuinely coming from the dispenser area. A circulation pump, if fitted and used to recycle water during wash and rinses, was suggested as a possible source. It was also noted that the sound could be normal operating noise, but this was not confirmed.
What fixed it
No definite repair was confirmed. The accepted advice was that the noise could not be diagnosed without hearing it, and because a Miele engineer had already stripped the machine and was referring the issue to Miele, further assessment was appropriate. The exact repair was not confirmed.
Checks to try
  • Miele agent stripped down the machine
  • Video of the noise was taken for discussion with Miele
  • Noise occurs when the water drains
  • Noise seems to come from behind the dispenser drawer

Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

It could just be normal sounds of the washing machine, but if an engineer thinks it needs investigating further then maybe there is a problem. It is highly unusual for a brand-new Miele washing machine to be noisy though. If the main pump was causing a noise the sound would not be expected to be in the area you describe. If there is a circulation pump though, which runs on wash and rinses to recycle water back into the drum then that could possibly account for the noise. But unfortunately without hearing any noise it is not possible to work out what is causing it.
