I suspect my drum has broken

Hi all,

I looked through a lot of information but can't figure out what part of the machine has broken and why? Hopefully I can find some advice.

I have a hotpoint aquarius wdal 8640.

Last night during a drying cycle the machine made an almighty banging noise so I turned it off and discovered some snapped plastic and the seal pulled down. Am I right in thinking the drum has broken?

Many thanks for any input.

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.

Hotpoint Aquarius WDAL 8640 banged during drying; suspected broken outer drum

The problem
During a drying cycle, the Hotpoint Aquarius WDAL 8640 made a very loud banging noise. After switching off, the owner found snapped plastic and the door seal pulled down, and suspected drum damage.
Likely cause
The accepted reply said the damage appeared terminal if the broken plastic was from the outer drum. A suggested cause was a metal item left in a pocket getting into the drum, but this was not confirmed.
What fixed it
Forum advice was that replacing the drum/outer drum would be a major repair and could cost £200+, so replacement of the appliance was considered the practical option. The owner said they would be getting a new machine.
Checks to try
  • Observed loud banging during drying cycle
  • Found snapped plastic
  • Found the seal pulled down
Parts or tools mentioned
  • Outer drum

Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

That looks terminal if the plastic is the outer drum. Usually caused by something metal left in a pocket that gets into the drum.

Thank you for the reply. Terminal as in the drum could be replaced do you think? Or new washing machine time?
