Programme and time

I have a Hotpoint BIWMHG91484 Integrated 9kg 1400 Spin Washing Machine.

It can only take 4.5kg on the Mixed programme. I was using Mixed everyday for ages as it only takes 1 hr but the clothes always came out smelling rank. All other programs are 2hr plus but the clothes come out smelling good.

What programme do you use for normal every day washing? And how long does it take?

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.

Hotpoint BIWMHG91484 quick Mixed programme gives poor wash results

The problem
The Hotpoint BIWMHG91484 was being used mainly on the Mixed programme because it takes about 1 hour, but laundry came out smelling unpleasant. Longer programmes of 2 hours or more produced good-smelling washing. The user also noted the Mixed programme only allows a 4.5kg load.
Likely cause
The accepted reply says the issue is not a fault but the limitation of quick wash cycles: shorter programmes do not clean heavily or normally soiled laundry as effectively as standard cycles in modern machines.
What fixed it
Use a standard full-length wash programme for everyday laundry rather than relying on the quick Mixed cycle. The accepted advice was that 40°C cottons is the most commonly used everyday wash, with 60°C for items needing a hotter wash and 30°C for delicate items. The exact repair was not applicable because no appliance fault was identified.
Checks to try
  • Compared wash results between the 1-hour Mixed programme and longer 2-hour-plus programmes
  • Noted that longer programmes left clothes smelling good while the quick programme did not
  • Noted the Mixed programme has a 4.5kg load limit

Hi. Any wash cycle that gets things properly clean in a modern washing machine takes a couple of hours or so. As you've found, trying to cut the time down only results in poor quality wash.

40 degree cottons is considered the most used wash, but some need 60 degrees and some need 30 if delicate.

There is no way around this as modern washing machines are designed to wash slowly but use less electricity and water.

In my opinion all these quick wash cycles are a useless gimmick unless just freshening up laundry that is hardly dirty at all -

Why do washing machines take so long to wash?
