What is this part (loose at bottom of machine)?

This is a Hotpoint NSWM 743U. In mid-cycle yesterday it made an odd noise and the drum stopped turning, although I could hear the motor running. I took the back off and the belt had fallen off. Replaced this no problem, but the white object in the pics was loose at the bottom of the machine. Googling turns up nothing. What is this part for?
