This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.

Zanussi ZWX1605W drain pump runs continuously and cycle will not start

The problem
A Zanussi ZWX1605W washing machine would not start a normal cycle or take in water, and the drain pump ran continuously. On the rinse section it would take in water and the drum moved back and forth. On the spin section it drained the water but continued running the drain pump and did not spin.
Likely cause
The accepted reply suggested a possible insulation fault, but this was not confirmed. No error code information was provided.
What fixed it
No confirmed repair was documented. The accepted advice was that an insulation test meter would be needed for diagnosis, and that the machine should be looked at by an engineer. Exact repair not confirmed.
Checks to try
  • Observed that the pump ran continuously
  • Advanced the programme to rinse, where it took in water and the drum moved back and forth
  • Advanced the programme to spin, where it drained but did not spin
  • Advice to check for any flashing lights indicating an error code
Parts or tools mentioned
  • Insulation test meter

Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

It could be an insulation fault but an insulation test meter would be required to test it. If any lights are flashingit could be indicating an error code, which would be better for diagnosing but it sounds like it needs looking at by an engineer.
