Zanussi Aquacycle 1200 Locking And Cycle Start

Went to put the washing on, door locked but the cycle failed to start. I have since managed to get the door open but whenever I turn the machine back on with the door open their is a continuous clicking sound as if it is wanting to lock the door. When I then close the door it locks immediately but the cycle again doesn't start.
I would be very grateful for any advice.

Educated guess would be the door interlock is faulty or damaged but I can only guess without seeing it.
