A strange one that. The all-buttons-flashing is an annoying one and probably confuses some engineers. You probably know more details than me but I would have thought an engineer who doesn't know what they are doing would almost always just write the machine off or at least try to take the washer away when faced with a fault they don't know the cause of. And an engineer deliberately trying to rip someone off would almost always only fit an unnecessary part (or "pretend" to fit one) once they'd satisfied themselves they knew what the real fault was and of course had fixed it.
I've not heard of one so bad they deliberately fitted expensive parts knowing full well it wouldn't fix the machine and the original fault would still be there. The fact that the guy decided it was the motor and actually fitted one implies he at least thought he knew what it was - maybe he even experienced a similar fault that was? But presumably after fitting it was tested and the fault was gone? Maybe he was more incompetent or just not very thorough - which I can understand still equates to "cowboy" to some.
