Hoover Vhd814 Won't Start

Hi all

I have a problem with the above mentioned washer

On power up (selecting a program) the door security LED remains statically lit - it should ordinarily flash until the start button is pressed - whereupon the interlock activates and the machine starts filling etc...

I thought it could be the interlock - so I replaced that - but no change.

On occasion in the past if you rotated the program dial - the door security LED would flash and it would start the program. Of late though nothing seems to get it to start. When it did start - it ran through the program fine with no errors.

The different programs still display their relevant spin / temperature LEDs when selected by the dial - and when you press the start button - the stop button stops flashing and the relevant time LED lights. So all seems fine on the program select front.

Any ideas?

On some washing machines other faults can cause the whole machine to stop working such as an open circuit motor including carbon brush faults. If you can't see any carbon brush faults it'd be better to get someone in.

Ha ha - lovely Good work. This article gives general advice on carbon brushes, it's written about Hotpoint / Creda brushes but the principle's the same for all brushes - carbon brushes diagnostics

I would kiss you if you were a bit prettier !!

Removed the motor and upon removing one of the brushes - the carbon was part seized in its holder thanks to the dust throwback.

I loosen it and blew out the carbon dust with some compressed air - et voila - a working machine!!

I will replace them anyway as they seem a little on the short side - which probably made the seizing more likely as there is less push from the spring.

One more machine saved from scrapping - for now...!

The motor fault I described can cause all the lights to work but machine won't start. It's possible for the fault (if it was anything to do with the motor) to be intermittent so that sometimes it will work. The problem is intermittent faults are often a nightmare to troubleshoot, even for repairmen.

Hi there

Thanks for the reply.

If it were a motor fault I thought the machine wouldn't operate properly? As it is - when it does decide to kick in (door security LED flashing - press start & interlock activates / machine fills) it works just fine right though the programs.

It seems to be something which is affecting the machine on power-up. I disconnected the heater (suspecting an earth leakage) and that made no difference. Similarly the inlet valves & pumps. Checked the board / connectors and re-flowed the majority of the joints.

I've just not found anyone with a similar problem. Lots of people with constant door security LEDs flashing - but not one that remains lit on power up and remains lit
