Under centrifugal force during spin laundry gets forced through the holes in the drum. If there is a hole in a paddle just be aware that it could result in damge and ripping of laundry depending where it is and size etc.

I'll take a look at the sump aperture and see if I can access the screws from there. Failing that, I think I'll avoid stripping down to the drum until I encounter a do or die situation with the the machine (bearing failure for example). The washer is still functional so I'll file down the sharp edges around the hole and keep an eye on it.

Good tip. I checked the pump filter last night and found nothing other than the broken pieces of plastic. I didn't think to check the sump hose so I'll take a look at that tonight. Thanks for all your help WW

Also, you need to investigate what caused the damage to the paddle. Check inside the sump hose and pump filter in case a coin or something is stuck inside it. If there is something like this stuck inside the outer drum underneath the inner drum it can break the outer plastic drum and write the machine off if it gets whipped up during a future spin.

Yes it does look like it's got screw holes, many just clip into place and can be swapped over in less than a minute. Some Hotpoint and Indesit ones just need a small screw driver pressing into a specific hole to bend down a clip and allow it to slide out. If yours wont slide out and appear fixed solid it may be they need screwing in from the other side. In that case, unless you are up for stripping the drum out and all that involves I'd get an engineer in or return the part unopened for a refund and abandon the job.

On the spare parts site it says, "This genuine replacement Drum Paddle is an easy to fit replacement part", which if it turns out you need to strip the drum out is pretty incorrect. One thing to think about is, could it be possible to get to the screw from underneath by removing the sump hose? It's a long shot, but could they have designed it so that it lines up with the hole in the sump hose aperture?

Yes it's the curved paddle that I need and by the looks of it, the paddle has a screw housing at either end. I've been having a look around to find information about removing the drum and as you said, it doesn't look like an easy job. I'll wait for the part to arrive and check to be sure before I decide what to do.
