Hotpoint Ultima Wt721 Banging on spin
The above machine has started banging whilst on 1200rpm spin it sounds like a tractor on tick over! The drum does appears to be out of balance when spinning. Bearings seem ok. Took lid off to see if concrete block was loose, but was ok. Checked the bolts. Went underneath to see if dampers loose, they look ok but was difficult to try and move them as the drum had rested on the back on the machine as I had it tip backwards at 45 degrees.
thanks for any help

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.
Hotpoint Ultima WT721 bangs loudly on 1200rpm spin with drum play
- The problem
- Hotpoint Ultima WT721 was banging heavily on a 1200rpm spin, described as sounding like a tractor at tickover. The drum appeared out of balance during spin. The top concrete weight and visible bolts were checked and found secure, and the dampers looked in place.
- Likely cause
- The strongest supported diagnosis is wear or play in the drum shaft/bearings or possibly a drum support issue, because the inner drum could be moved up and down at the front near the door seal. A loose drum weight was suggested first, but the original poster later reported no loose drum weights. The exact fault was not confirmed.
- What fixed it
- Recommended checks were to inspect all drum weights, including the front and possibly underside, and assess whether the inner drum had excessive up-and-down play. The original poster decided the machine was not worth repairing at 8 years old and ordered a replacement instead of pursuing further repair.
- Checks to try
- Checked top drum/concrete weight
- Checked bolts
- Looked at dampers underneath
- Checked for loose drum weights
- Observed up-and-down play in the drum at the front near the door seal
- Noted no grinding noise when rotating the drum by hand
Safety: Do not continue using the machine until the cause of the banging is resolved, as further damage may occur. Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

Check the drum weights, one or more may be loose. Don't use the machine until fixed or it will become fatally damaged.

Here is the link to a machine making the same noise!
Hi thanks for the reply. I have checked the drum weight on top on the drum, can not see any others. On doing further investigation the drum moves when lifted at the front near the door seal which apparently is worn bearings. It does not however make a grinding noise when the drum is rotated by hand. It 8 years old so ordered a new one, not worth the hassle of repairing or paying for an engineer to do the work
Hi, there's usually a concrete drum weight on the front of the drum behind the door seal, and sometimes underneath the drum too. With a loose drum weight you should be able to reproduce the noise by disconnecting the washer and taking the top off and then shaking the drum around firmly. The inner drum shouldn't have much up and down play in it on the shaft. Worn drum bearings should rumble when the drum is spun by hand and sound a bit like this - what do worn drum bearings sound like? It could be one of the drum spider arms broken or cracked, you should be able to lift the drum at the point where one of the plastic drum lifters is if that's the case.

No drum weights loose. But as previously stated, there is/appears to be play in the drum shaft as I can move the drum up and down at the front whilst holding the door seal still. It does not appear to be as noisy at the moment. It may have been an unbalanced load the has extenuated the movement of the drum causing the banging.
