My sons waste hose became worn our and started leaking. We have bought a replacement, however I'm confused as it has a difference at one end. The origional has a added small one inch pipe coming iff it. Is there any way round attaching a standard waste hose?

A washing machine drain hose is normally pushed into a stand pipe (rare these days), where the end of the hose shouldn't matter. Or pushed onto a tapered plastic tube which then screws onto a thread on a spigot on the u-bend (see pic in link below). Many replacement drain hoses have a rubber bit on the end. If this is too big to fit onto the u-bend part it can be cut off and the corrugated drain hose pushed (forced) as far as it can go onto the tube. It's best to fasten the hose on with a jubilee clip (don't over-tighten or you'll squash the tube) or cable ties fastened as tight as possible.
