Hi my Miele WKG 120 is 14 months old and I have got a Miele engineer coming next week. The suspension springs keep going. On the first visit they were replaced, 2nd visit, lubricated and it's started to make the same noise as last time. I believe overloading the machine can cause this, I feel like I take great care not to overload it as I love the machine. I really want to stop the springs from going. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Hello Mel. When you say the suspension springs keep going, what exactly happens to them - what are the symptoms?

It seems highly unusual for the suspension on a Miele to go wrong more than once, especially in such a short time. I would say it's highly unusual for it to go wrong even once at that age. Having said that I recently stripped down several brands of new washing machines and found the Miele suspension being used didn't look much different to the other "normal" brands. I like to think it's better quality but it looked very similar. Suspension on any new washing machine doesn't normally give any trouble.

My own Miele is 12 years old and never gone wrong. I thought the suspension had been playing up for months because it kept making a loud squeaking noise on spin. I later realised it was the lid that was moving around and cured it by tightening it up.

I don't think overloading should cause the springs to go. Especially on a Miele. Contrary to layman's logic, under-loading can be much worse. If you under-load, especially with towels or sheets inside then the drum can become unbalanced. This can cause the drum to bang about on spin and puts great strain on the suspension. Again, having said that, a Miele washing machine should be able to cope with all but the most persistently bad loads. It should also be sophisticated enough to not allow any badly balanced loads spin at all. For a good understanding of loading try my article here Washing machine jumps and bangs on spin
