Miele Pump Filter

Very cleverly Miele machines have a flap to open on the bottom left of the machine. To open this there is a special orange plastic spatular located in the backplate of the soap drawer! Dont use a knife or anything nasty like that else you might scratch the paintwork or damage the flap.

The flap should reveal a screw knob which is the drain filter and also an orange (flimsy feeling) tab. This tab is the emergency door opening device. Very useful should there be a power cut or your machine decides to be poorly.

What is remarkable about Miele is that when you unscrew the drain filter water flows onto the flap. You can place a bowl under the flap to contain the water. Unlike some machines the drain filter screw is located so far down you cant even get a tea tray under the machine to empty it. My old Hoover was like that! If your bowl is full simpy tighten the screw and water will be interrupted giving you time to empty the bowl away. This is also a way you can drain the machine should it fail mid cycle or during a power cut. On many machines I think you have to pull them out and drain them by lowering the waste pipe into a bucket. My Miele washer dryer weighs 101kgs (tare) which I think equates to about 16 stone so pulling it out with wet washing and water would be back breaking.

Once all the water has stopped coming out of the filter screw you can remove it entirely.You can remove any objects caught in it such as fluff, buttons etc. You can also use the opportunity to check the pump impeller by giving it a twist. If it moves freely then it is OK. I do nto think there is any mesh or screen to clean.

When your done simply replace the filter by screwing it back in. Mind you see it's tightly done up to stop any seepage of water.

I think im a fussy devil but after each wash I wipe the inside of the glass door of my Miele washer dryer and wipe the rubber surround to make sure it's dry and clean. A little bit of spray furniture polish on a yellow duster does wonders for the beautiful chrome surround to the door and makes the control facia and paintwork shine.

I have become quite proud of my Miele!

My Miele pump filter is the same, it doesn't have any "filter", it just has something there to trap large objects, or accumulated lint etc. Anything small enough to trap in an actual filter will happily just get pumped out with the water. So it's unnecessary to use what we would think of as a "filter".

So the job of the pump filter is mostly to prevent large obstructions getting inside the pump and therefore you would mostly not find anything in there.

Regarding water coming out, this is perfectly normal and happens with all washing machine pump filters. This is because a washing machine pump is not capable of pumping every last drop of water out. Therefore, around at least a mug-full of water remains inside the pump and sump hose after each wash. So always place a towel down when checking it

If by any chance there is a lot more water than this, then there is an issue that would need investigating.
