Smeg, loud noise on spin and burning smell

Hi,

I have a 7 year old Smeg WMI12C7. The last wash I did caused a really loud racket when on the final spin cycle plus I could smell a lot of burning rubber. I know it's impossible to diagnose without looking but wondered if anyone had any ideas of what is the cause and prices of fix? Or if it was worth repairing or gettng a new one?

Thanks in advance.

A burning rubber smell can come from from the door seal if either the drum becomes loose and catches on it or sometimes if an item of laundry gets caught between the small gap between the drum and back of door seal. Check the door seal for signs of friction and check the drum hasn't become all loose or lifts up and down due to collapsed bearings.

It sounds like a potentially serious fault. Check the drum pulley hasn’t come loose where the belt fits in the back of the drum but if there is a lot of up and down play in the drum either the bearings have collapsed or the drum spider broken. It’s very unlikely drum bearings would collapse though without being noisy for weeks before.

Thank you for your response Andy. Indeed the drum is very loose, the door seal looks intact. I guess a new washing machine then?
