Installation And Removal
Are there any companies that you can recommend that remove the old machine and install the new one? I'd like to order from John Lewis but they only have a removal service (and you have to disconnect everything). I'm not really confident enough to know what I'm doing and I'd rather pay for peace of mind and knowing it has all been taken out and installed correctly! I suppose the alternative would be to pay a local plumber - what would be a reasonable charge for this service? P.S. Any update on the Siemens review - I am tempted by this as a cheaper (and lighter!) alternative to Miele because of the hydrosafe feature...

It's not a difficult job to do if you know someone handy. I have some help on how to install a washing machine here - How to install a washing machine.
Also, good clear instructions about the unpacking of the new washing machine will come with it.
Unpacking and installing the new washing machine is one thing, but it's unlikely that anyone agreeing to install the new washing machine for you would take the old one away. You can ask (some may do) but if not you may still need to book John Lewis to take it. Alternatively, the installer may agree to put it round the back for you, and you can try to get your local council to take it at a later date (there could be a charge).
