Washing Machine Flood Caused By Coin?

I live in New York City and I moved into a brand new apartment building which had a front load washing machine which flooded the entire apartment. They found in the machine $0.15 and I did not use High Efficiency Soap so they are saying that the coins and the wrong soap caused the machines to flood - so I am liable and owe quite a bit of money to replace the floors.

It seems unusual to me that out of hundreds of apartments in the building that I would be the only one who could have flooded the washing machine under this circumstance. It seems like a very common scenario (a few coins & low efficiency soap). Do you think its possible to flood under this circumstance and that I would be liable - or do you think it has something to do either with the installation or the machine itself?

Many thanks,

Finding money inside the washing machine means nothing, I'd wager more than half of all washing machines in the entire world have got or have had coins in them. What matters is whether the coins caused the fault or not. Just producing them and saying they did is bogus unless they explain exactly how they have caused the flood. If they have also said it was caused by using the wrong soap detergent then it can't have been both. It sounds like they are guessing.

You need to get them to explain exactly how they caused the washer to flood. If it turns out to be the coins or the wrong detergent does your house insurance cover accidental damage?

What is high and low efficiency soap? We don't have it in the UK. I know in the US you have low suds detergent and high suds detergent. If you used detergent meant for top loaders in a front loader it could cause excessive foaming which could leak out of the machine. I wouldn't expect it to cause a severe flood damaging floorboards but if when you returned there was foam all over the machine then that may well be the cause.
