Some of the clothes come out as if they are bleached and all patchy, could this be a fault on the washing machine or the washing powder?

If they have actually been bleached I would suspect the detergent or something introduced into the machine. The washing machine couldn't bleach laundry on its own. Overloading the drum with a tablet placed on top could trap the detergent inside folds in the laundry causing bleaching.

Have a look at this question on my main Washerhelp site which may be of help - especially the link to Bold's web site which has a section covering common causes for marks on clothes. Washing (laundry) is still dirty or has marks on it (marks on clothes)
