Ariston 1400Swd Will Not Start (Anything)

I have a washing machine which im trying to repair for my landlord. He called out an engineer who said that he suspected that it was a PCB issue and would not be worth fixing.Taking his word as gospel (mistake i know) i ordered a replacement pcb and fitted it. However the same symptons persist. When you try to start any option on the dial the machine will lock the door (audible) and the light will NOT come on for the door lock and then it will not go any further. When you canel the cycle, the door light FLASHES but the lock remains engaged. There are no problems with the water pipes and the last time the machine worked (slightly) it completed a whole cycle and then would not let the door open until it was left for about 15 minutes off.

Thanks for reading

Solution Summary

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.

Ariston 1400Swd locks door but will not start any programme

The problem
The Ariston 1400Swd would not start on any dial setting. When a programme was selected, the door lock could be heard engaging but the door lock light did not illuminate and the machine went no further. Cancelling the cycle made the door light flash, but the door remained locked. A replacement PCB had already been fitted with no change. The last reported operation was a complete cycle after which the door would not open for about 15 minutes once switched off.
Likely cause
The discussion most strongly supports a door lock fault as a possible cause because the lock engages but the door lock light does not come on. However, the accepted reply also states that other faults could be present and no definite diagnosis was confirmed.
What fixed it
The accepted advice was not to continue buying parts speculatively. Because replacing the PCB made no difference and the exact fault was not established, the recommendation was that it was not worth further time or money and replacement was the more sensible option.
Checks to try
  • Door lock engages audibly when a programme is started
  • Door lock light does not illuminate on start
  • Door light flashes when the cycle is cancelled
  • Door remains locked after cancelling
  • Replacement PCB fitted with no change
  • Machine previously completed a cycle but then delayed unlocking for about 15 minutes when switched off
Parts or tools mentioned
  • Replacement PCB

Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

Hello Thomas, yes it sounds like you made a mistake there. The reason the engineer said it wasn't worth fixing is very likely to be because he wasn't sure - otherwise why not fit the part or at least try and get it to work? If the door lock light doesn't come on maybe the door lock is faulty but who knows what else could be wrong? The problem is these machines are cheap and nasty and not worth throwing money at. I wouldn't waste any more time and money on speculatively buying parts. What I'm puzzled by is why isn't the landlord getting you a new machine?
