Can't see any soapsuds when machine is washing but the tablets have gone from the drawer - washing looks and smells clean but could be the fabric conditioner - have used the same tablets for years - I have also cleaned out the drawer and all the vents inside the draw!!! Help!

Fabric conditioner kills soap suds, so if the fabric conditioner is getting washed down prematurely with the tablets it could account for the lack of suds. Check out this article fabric Softener Drains out too soon

You could also try washing a load without fabric conditioner in to see if they are still clean. However, fabric conditioner can't really clean laundry in cold water just on the last rinse so it could account for them smelling nice but not really cleaning the laundry. There shouldn't be many soap suds anyway as they put suppressants in to reduce suds, which interfere with cleaning because they cushion laundry and prevent them rubbing against each other.
