My dad keeps pausing the washing machine mid cycle and opening the draw he puts more water in with a jug engineer has came out and told him not to do this but he still.

If he wants to add more water all he has to do is pour it into the soap dispenser. No need to stop the machine. Has he said why he thinks he needs to do it? Washing machines are designed to use very little water these days. They shower the laundry with water using a recycling pump or they lift and sprinkle water using the drum paddles.
