Hi, I have a Hoover OPH148, front loading washing machine about 6 years old. In the last 6 months it has developed an intermittent draining problem. When this happens I drain the machine through the filter fitting and check the filter after a small amount of water comes out. Sometimes this fixes the problem, sometimes not. For no reason it then continues to work OK for a period. Should I buy a new pump ? Hoping you can help. Nick

Hello Nick. When you drain the machine do you mean through a small emergency drain hose at the pump filter or by removing the pump filter?

Try going through all these articles carefully to see if you can work out the problem Washing machine not draining water but if you can establish that the pump is always running but it is just not pumping the waterway properly and you can find a blockage in the filter then check out this article carefully too Can’t find a blockage in pump filter but pump still not draining

I would stick to what I said in my first reply that the main suspect is the pump isn’t draining the water fast enough. If the filter isn’t blocked there can still be a blockage elsewhere inside the pump or the sump hose or the drain hose or even at the u-bend connection if the drain hose is plumbed into the u-bend under the sink.

So when the door lock opens and you open the door the drum is full of water? Has it drained any water at all?

Hi Andy,

As the programme reaches drain/spin the machine stops, lights are on including the door lock. After a while door lock goes off and I can open the door to drain manually. Alternative setting the machine to drain or spin completes the cycle. Commencing the wash programme results in either the same thing happening again or completes as normal, hence intermittant. Any help greatly appreciated. Nick.

Hi Nick. When the washing machine stops, does everything cut out as though it was turned off at the mains or do the lights stay on? If the door lock was intermittently causing machine to cut out it seems odd that it always does it at the same point. One thing that can cause your fault is if the machine is pumping water out at a reduced rate and cuts out just before pin when the pressure switch till shows water inside the drum.

Then when you put it on a second time it manages to pump the rest of the water out ok. However, if this was the issue it should only cut out after draining for a few minutes.

Hi Andy, Having studied this a bit more now, what happens is........ As the wash cycle progresses it reaches the spin cycle and then stops and the machine does not drain. It will drain if then moved manually to a spin cycle. From what I read the door locking mechanism could be faulty which could also make the problem intermittant, I guess. Any help greatly appreciated. Nick.
