Miele W5740 drive belt come off and showing technical fault
Hi. We recently returned from a holiday abroad. Started up washing machine. It is a Miele W5740 fairly old, all went fine until near the end of the washing cycle it stopped with technical problem showing in display window. I started it up again and heard a high pitch whining sound. I realised that it sounded like a drive motor running without a load. Stripped it down and found drive belt had come off pulley. I ordered new genuine part drive belt and fitted it. Started machine up drum turning perfectly, but it was on the spin cycle and stopped after about 5 seconds later with the same technical fault showing in the display window. I checked the filter and extract pump impeller to see if anything was obstructing the impeller. All clear, but same technical fault keeps appeared on starting the machine. Could you please advise me what the problem might be.
Much appreciated

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.
Miele W5740 stops with generic technical fault after drive belt replacement
- The problem
- A Miele W5740 completed most of a wash cycle, then stopped near the end with 'technical fault' shown on the display. A high-pitched whining noise suggested the motor was running without load, and inspection found the drive belt had come off the pulley. After fitting a new genuine drive belt, the drum turned normally but the machine stopped again after about 5 seconds on spin with the same generic technical fault. The pump filter and drain pump impeller were checked and found clear.
- Likely cause
- No confirmed cause was identified. The strongest suggestion in the discussion was a possible motor-related fault that may also have contributed to the belt coming off, but this was explicitly described as speculation.
- What fixed it
- A new genuine drive belt was fitted, but this did not resolve the fault. No further repair was confirmed because the display gave only a generic 'technical fault' message with no code, and contributors advised that no published diagnostic information was available for that message. Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.
- Checks to try
- Drive belt inspected and found off the pulley
- New genuine drive belt fitted
- Machine retested on spin cycle
- Pump filter checked
- Drain pump impeller checked and found clear
- Confirmed no lettered or numbered fault code was displayed
- Parts or tools mentioned
- Genuine drive belt
Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

Hi David. Has it thrown the belt off again or is belt still on with this error. What error is it?

Hi Andy,
the belt has not come off again. Fault showing is just technical fault no letters or numbers. When I start the machine up it starts in the spin cycle where the belt originally came off. The drum spins in the normal way for about 5 seconds then cuts out with the same technical fault showing in display widow. Would you have any idea what is causing this problem.
many thanks

Hello David. It's very strange, it sounds like 2 unrelated faults but if the above happened at the same time it makes no sense. Unfortunately, if it just says technical fault with no letters or numbers, then it sounds like something that Miele have not published any information about. The only thing I could speculate on is that possibly a fault on the motor caused the technical fault and the belt to come off if the fault resulted in the temporary loss of control of the motor speed. But that's just pure speculation and I can't really advise how to troubleshoot.
