Solution Summary

AI-generated from this discussion

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.

Hotpoint BWD129 door will not open normally, door lock light flashing

The problem
On a Hotpoint BWD129, the wash cycle completes and drains correctly, but the door lock light flashes at the end and the door cannot be opened normally. The door can only be released using a piece of string. Replacing the door interlock made no difference.
Likely cause
The strongest supported diagnosis is a mechanical fault in the door opening mechanism, such as the door catch or related release linkage, rather than the interlock itself. A pressure system blockage was mentioned only as a possibility if the door opened normally at other times, but the later replies point more strongly to a mechanical opening fault because the door will not open at all without using the string.
What fixed it
Investigate the door opening mechanism and door catch to see why the normal door release is not pulling the same part that the string is pulling to open the door. The exact repair was not confirmed in the discussion.
Checks to try
  • Confirmed the machine runs through a cycle normally
  • Confirmed the machine drains normally
  • Observed only the door lock light flashing at the end of the cycle
  • Door can be opened using a string around the frame
  • Replaced the door interlock with no change
  • Checked the door catch with the door open
  • Confirmed the door will not open at all without the string, even when unplugged
Parts or tools mentioned
  • door interlock
  • piece of string

Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

Sorry Ajazahmeduk I found it tricky to work out what your problem was with the description - do you mean the door is jammed shut and you can't open the door unless you use some string? If so and a new door interlock hasn't fixed it I'd have to suspect the door catch on the door Washing Machine Door Will Not Open

Hi Andy

the washing machine runs through a cycle ok but when it finishes the door lock light flashes. No other lights are on or flashing.

i can only open the door using a string around its frame.

I've changed the interlock but didn't make a difference.

the catch on the door seems to be working OK as I've checked it with the door open.

Does the door only not open at the end of a cycle or will it not open at all without the string? If it won't open without the string it must be some mechanical problem with the door mechanism. if it opens OK but just not at the end of a cycle I'd suspect a possible pressure system blockage if there is a system in place to stop the door opening with water inside. A blocked pressue system can trap air in the pressure chamber and make the machine think water is inside when it isn't. But it could be aborting due to a different fault.

Hi Andy,

Door will not open at all without the string. Door light flashes. If I unplug it, it still won't open

ive replaced the interlock mechanism but how can I check that it is working ok (replacement could be faulty as well)

Thanks

Whatever the string does when it opens the door, the door open button or door catch should be doing. You have to operate the door open mechanism and work out why it isn't pulling on the bit that the string is pulling on to open it.
