Hoover H Wash 500 unable to open filter door

Just posting this here in the hope it helps someone else stuck in the same position I was in last night.

If you've got a Hoover H Wash 500 washing machine, the front filter door isn't easy to open and you might think it's on some kind of locking mechanism, similar to the main door.

Short answer - it isn't. The hinge is on the left hand side of the door and you might have to slide something like a credit card corner into the 3 o'clock position on the door to be able to release the catch.

Hoover H-Wash 500 filter access flap difficult to open

The problem
The thread concerns difficulty opening the small front flap/cover that gives access to the pump filter on a Hoover H Wash 500 washing machine. The original post says the flap can seem locked but is not on a locking mechanism.
Likely cause
Most strongly supported explanation is that the outer access flap catch is simply awkward to release, rather than a failed lock. The accepted reply says there is no obvious fault that would normally make the casing flap stick, unless the hinge had seized, but this was not confirmed.
What fixed it
The original poster reported that the flap hinge is on the left-hand side and that releasing the catch may require sliding a thin card-like item into the 3 o'clock position on the flap. The accepted reply also suggested checking the instruction manual for the correct opening method. No confirmed repair beyond opening advice was documented.
Checks to try
  • Identified whether the issue was the outer access flap or the actual pump filter behind it
  • Tried releasing the flap catch at the 3 o'clock position
  • Considered whether the flap uses a push-in spring catch
  • Suggested checking the instruction manual
Parts or tools mentioned
  • credit card or similar thin card

Hello Manda. If you are talking about the actual pump filter that you would normally unscrew or unlock, and pull out to reveal the filter, then this article has a section on what to do if your pump filter is stuck.

But if you are talking about the metal flap or door built into the casing of a washing machine that provides access to the filter, then that's a totally different thing. There's no reason whatsoever why one of those would not open, and I cannot think of any fault that could cause it to stick. Not unless somehow it was hinged and the hinges had rusted.

Maybe you push it in and there is a spring-loaded catch? Alternatively it would need to be gently prised open, though they would normally be some indication of which side to do this on. Full instructions would be in the instruction manual, which can be downloaded if you don't have one.
